Football or soccer? Why is American football called football if you use your hands? If you ask me, there are many things that appear to be inappropriately named until you find out the history. I found out that there are at least two narratives on the origin of the name, football.

Well, most people believe that the name, “football” originated from the sport being played with a ball that is kicked by the foot. The word “foot” refers to using one’s feet to control the ball. “Ball” refers to the object being kicked. This sport has been referred to as “football” since the early 19th century in England, and the name has been adopted by many other countries in the world. What is it to you, football or soccer

What role has history got to play?

Unlike the explanation above, historians believe that the term dates back to the late Middle Ages. Then, it was used to refer to any sport that was played on foot, as opposed to sports played on horseback. Over centuries, it came to be associated with different kicking games played throughout the U.K. The rules were eventually combined and standardized to form football (or soccer, as it’s known in the U.S.) in the mid-19th century. Ok! Enough of the history lessons.

Football or soccer, what’s the difference?

Football and soccer are two of the most popular sports in the world, and while they share many similarities, there are some key differences between them.

Also known as American football, football is a sport played primarily in the United States and Canada. It is a physically demanding sport that involves a lot of contact and tackles. Each team consists of 11 players, and the objective is to carry or pass the ball across the opponent’s goal line. Points are scored in a variety of ways, including touchdowns, field goals, and extra points.

Soccer, on the other hand, is the most popular sport in the world and is played in over 200 countries. It is also known as association football. The objective of the game is to score goals by kicking the ball into the opposing team’s net. Each team consists of 11 players, and the ball can only be touched by the feet, knees, chest, and head.

Another key difference between football and soccer is the length of the game. Football games are divided into four quarters, each lasting 15 minutes, with a halftime break in the middle. Soccer games, on the other hand, are typically 90 minutes long, with a halftime break of 15 minutes.

Are there similarities in equipment used for football or soccer?

Both sports require the use of different equipment. Football players wear helmets and padding to protect themselves from the physical nature of the sport. Soccer players wear shin guards to protect their legs. In football, the ball is oval-shaped, while the ball used in soccer is round. Finally, the rules of the game are also different between football and soccer. In football, players are allowed to use their hands, but only if they are carrying the ball or if they are playing defense. In soccer, players are not allowed to use their hands, except for the goalkeeper, who can use their hands within the penalty area.

In conclusion, while football and soccer share many similarities, they are also distinct in many ways, including the way they are played, the length of the game, the equipment used, and the rules of the game. Whether you prefer football or soccer, both sports are enjoyed by millions of people around the world and are sure to continue to be popular for many years to come.

  1. Wow, excellent write up. An eye opener for me, not so much a fan of either of the sports but I have more understanding of football now and as we know, soccer is a world sport. I have always admired the looks and body build of football players🤗😊. Kudos

  2. For me both games I love so much…call me anything but I love the American football cos of the guys their pants makes their butt come out and that is enjoyable for me..hahahaha!! That’s just on a lighter mood…I love the energy it brings and the ability of players to make quick decision in spilt seconds to get to touch down …compared to soccer…soccer does not require much energy as Football becos it’s a fowl to touch any player. It has lots of skills that can be applied to ensure they make a goal. Both I can seat and watch for the length of time given. Nice piece Ms Wunmi

  3. Really interesting. I think the cultural difference matters and when in football territory, I call it football. When in soccer territory, I call it soccer.
